Job Title:   Traditional Medicine Tour Guide 
Department:  Destination Membertou
Reports to:    Director of Marketing
Term:  One-Year Term (with possibility for extension)

Destination Membertou is launching a new tourism experience in Summer of 2018.  The Department is seeking an eager and dedicated individual who is looking to launch their career in Tourism.

The role of the Traditional Tour Guide will be to conduct tours and provide guests with an engaging and informative experience within our community. The Tour Guide will lead guests through a traditional medicine walk and finish the experience with a workshop.

The selected individual must be prepared and willing to go through an intensive training program (consisting of botanic, cultural, communication and customer service) in order to prepare for the upcoming tourism season. The Tour Guide will provide a memorable experience for anyone wanting to learn more about Mi’kmaq culture and the community of Membertou.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Act as tour guide - share Mi’kmaq culture with visitors;
  • Provide guests with an engaging, informative and memorable experience;
  • Flexibility and availability to work weekends and evenings when necessary;
  • Share traditional knowledge of medicines and practices from the community;
  • Complies with Band Personnel Policy;
  • Maintain positive relationships with Membertou’s Internal and External Customers, ensuring transactions or information received on behalf of the Band and/or its members are kept confidential.
  • Maintain and improve Membertou’s Quality Management System as it relates to job related duties and/or department.
  • Any other related duties as required by the Director.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Training, educational background or knowledge in botany and/or traditional medicine   
  • An appreciation for nature and the outdoors
  • Passion and interest in sharing culture
  • Self-motivated
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Physically capable of hiking 
  • Ability to speak Mi’kmaq and/or French are considered assets
  • Preference given to Aboriginal peoples in accordance with the Aboriginal Employment Preferences Policy of the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

Job Title:  Tourism Liaison 
Department:  Destination Membertou
Reports to:   Director of Marketing
Term:  One-Year Term (with possibility for extension)

Destination Membertou is launching an exciting new tourism product in Summer 2018. The Department is seeking an eager, and dedicated individual looking to launch their career in Tourism.

The role of the Tourism Liaison will be to safely and courteously transport tourists between the Port of Sydney and Membertou safely and efficiently via shuttle bus (28-seater shuttle). This individual will also act as a cultural interpreter, and will provide tourists with an engaging experience while they are visiting the community of Membertou.

This role requires someone with a high level of professionalism when dealing with the public. As the Tourism Liaison, the individual will be responsible to drive the shuttle bus during tourism season, along with driving for other Membertou Corporate entities as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a clean and tidy bus;
  • Provide guests with a safe and pleasurable driving experience;
  • Flexibility and availability to work weekends;
  • Provide assistance to the department with planning and scheduling tours;
  • Assist with cultural workshop teachings;
  • Must be willing to work overtime;
  • Complies with Band Personnel Policy;
  • Maintain positive relationships with Membertou’s Internal and External Customers, ensuring transactions or information received on behalf of the Band and/or its members are kept confidential.
  • Maintain and improve Membertou’s Quality Management System as it relates to job related duties and/or department.
  • Any other related duties as required by the Director.

Qualifications:

  • Commercial Class 2 driver’s license
  • Criminal Background check and medical examination required
  • Nine years of driving with a clean record with no abstractions
  • Customer service experience
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Passion and interest in sharing culture
  • Ability to instruct a workshop is considered an asset
  • Ability to speak Mi’kmaq and/or French are considered assets
  • Preference given to Aboriginal peoples in accordance with the Aboriginal Employment Preferences Policy of the Canadian Human Rights Commission.
