The Membertou Human Resources Department was established in 2002 as a result of Membertou’s rapid growth.
The HR Department is responsible for duties such as Payroll, Occupational Health and Safety, Quality Assurance, staffing issues, employee benefits, new staff orientation, job postings, hiring procedure, maintaining staff.

Troy joined Membertou’s Human Resources department in July 2016, bringing over 15 years of related experience to his position.
His diverse portfolio includes experience working with University College of the North, Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nations Chiefs, the CB Industrial Board of Trade, and others. He is a graduate of Cape Breton University, where he earned a bachelor of business administration and other certifications.
Troy’s vision is to make Membertou a leader in human resources management, make employees feel valued and respected, foster an environment that makes Membertou the best organization to work with, and assist employees in being more effective and efficient with their jobs.
Richard has been employed with the Membertou Human Resources Department since December 2004. His duties include overseeing all aspects of recruitment, training, payroll, time and attendance as well as injury and accident reports.
His experience with human resources/payroll stems from the United States Navy. He has been in the field for 17 years, three years of US payroll and fourteen years of Canadian payroll.
Richard also earned an Administrative Assistant Certificate while in the Navy and completed a certificate in office management from Eskasoni. He completed the Leadership and Supervision course with Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC.) Most recently, he completed the Certificate of Professionalism for the Human Resources Practitioner with Saint Mary’s University. Richard is currently a member of the Workers Compensation Committee, Policy Committee, STEP UP Committee, Salary Review Committee and the Energy Efficiency Committee here in Membertou.
Peter’s role focuses on the development and maintenance of Membertou’s Occupational Health & Safety Program and ensuring compliance with the provisions of the OHS Act.
He has previous experience as a Health Safety & Environment Advisor, and also different safety roles in Sydney and Eskasoni. Peter received his education in Occupational Health & Safety Certificate of Accomplishment program at the Nova Scotia Community College at Marconi Campus.
Peter joined Membertou’s HR department in 2015.
April Michael joined the Human Resources Department in January 2017. Before working in Human Resources, April worked with Membertou’s Wellness Home as a Continuing Care Assistant, later returning to school for a career change.
Her daily responsibilities include assisting coworkers and community members with related inquiries, maintaining employee records, participating in employment interview processes, assisting with staff events, daily administrative duties, and other related duties.
